Three 'Good Sports' Awards to be given to PWGFS participants

Three Prince William Girls Fastpitch Softball participants will be presented with Mid-Atlantic Recreation and Parks Sports Alliance Dennis Callahan "Good Sports" Awards on Weds. Apr. 20 during the Prince William County Parks, Recreation & Tourism Commission meeting.

Valerie Chirinos, a player in the 16U division, and coaches/board members Larry Belk and Phil Freeman will receive the awards, which are given to players, coaches and administrators throughout Virginia and Maryland for their dedication and contributions to youth athletics.

Valerie joined PWGFS in 2018, playing for the 12U Lightning. She's since played for 12U Reign, 18U Phoenix and 16U Tigers, and will be a member of 16U Nighthawks this season. On each team she emerges as a selfless player willing to play whichever position the team needs (though her specialty is catcher) and a supportive teammate. Valerie rarely misses a practice or game. She's not a yeller; she leads by example. You can find her laughing and dancing on the field, however, picking up the team's spirits. Valerie has also played infield and outfield, and represented PWGFS on its 12U summer all-star team in 2019 and its Alliance travel softball team in 2021.

Larry's time with PWGFS started like many adults' do: Coaching his daughters. But in the 22 years since, Larry, a basketball lover, taught himself softball and has shared that knowledge with hundreds of girls from Dale City and the surrounding areas. He's affectionately referred to as Coach Larry by players in the league, aged 5 to 16, and is frequently spotted at clinics instructing players on the finer points while telling funny stories full of memorable phrases. Larry has been PWGFS equipment manager for more than 15 years, which means he is at times at the field by himself, drying out the muddy areas, cleaning off catcher's gear or performing any number of behind-the-scenes tasks that keep the league humming.

Phil has spent more than 20 years as part of PWGFS's heart and soul, as well as its brain. A gifted teacher who has coached in middle school, high school and travel softball, Phil can be found wandering PWGFS summer and winter clinics instructing players on the seven steps to a good softball swing. Phil also spearheads our pitching program, which helps ensure the league grows and games go smoothly by teaching young pitchers everything from wrist snaps at the very beginning to movement pitches as they advance. Phil is also an encyclopedia of area softball history. He donates his time graciously, with a focus on giving back to the community and the game.
